First time roulette players oftentimes assume that the numbers on the roulette wheel simply go in sequence from 0 to 36. In fact, the numbers are aligned in a seemingly random order around the wheel, and the sequence is different depending on whether you are playing European or American Roulette.
American Roulette Wheel
The American roulette wheel has all of the numbers from 1 to 36, plus a 0 and a 00 square, for a total of 38 possible numbers. The numbers are purposefully arranged in a non-sequential order. Originally this was done to avoid cheating on early roulette wheels (old fashioned roulette wheels often had a bias to one side of the wheel or the other, which would have made it easier to win if the player knew which set of numbers won more often).
Today, the placement of the numbers on the roulette wheel does not make a big difference in American roulette (roulette wheels are much more precise and a 'biased' wheel is very rare in modern casinos). The order of the numbers going clockwise are as follows:

- Neighbor Bets: A neighbor bet is a wager placed on any number on the oval portion of the table shown above. This bet places a straight bet on the number selected, plus 2 numbers to the left and two numbers to the right as they are arranged on the European roulette wheel. For example, placing a neighbor bet on '0' would place a straight bet on 0, 3, 15, 26, and 32. If you look at the diagram of the European Roulette wheel above, you will see that the numbers 3, 15, 26, and 32 all surround the number 0 on the wheel.
- Voisins du Zero: This bet is a wager on 0, on the 9 numbers to the left of 0, and on the 7 numbers to the right of 0 as they arranged on the European roulette wheel. Bets are split between numbers that are next to each other on the rectangular table. 2 chips are placed on the 0, 2, 3 trio; 1 chip is placed on the 4-7 split; 1 chip is placed on the 12-15 split; 1 chip is placed on the 18-21 split; 1 chip is placed on the 19-22 split; 1 chip is placed on the 32-35 split; and 2 chips are placed on the corner of 25/26/28/29.
- Tiers du Cylinre: This bet is a wager on numbers that make up one third of the European roulette wheel (33, 16, 24, 5, 10, 23, 8, 30, 11, 36, 13, and 27). All of the bets are split between numbers that are next to each other on the rectangular section table.

One such game is roulette, a favorite of both the casinos' gamers and proprietors.
The Importance of the Board and Layout
Roulette is an easy to understand and really simple game. These characteristics made it one of the most popular games of chance in all gambling establishments. This game however, will never be possible without the roulette table's two main components: the roulette wheel and the roulette layout. The former is the most important piece as it determines the winning bet. The latter is of lesser stature, but still remains a crucial part of the game table.
How is it important? Well, though roulette is still possible without a betting board, it remains an undeniable fact that the layout makes the betting process a lot easier. Now you don't have to wonder why some folks can make complex bets within the standard one-minute span. Such has a lot more to do with the roulette layout's simplified betting grid than plenty of practice.
3 Common Roulette Betting Layouts
There are many roulette varieties, and so are there several distinct roulette betting layouts. The ones you'll most likely find in casinos are the following:
1. Single zero roulette layout.
The single zero layout is a global standard, characterized by only one zero slot (0) dominating the 'top' of the grid. The rest of the layout is an archetype to all roulette tables. Inside bets are all positioned on the side closest to the dealer while the outside bets are located on in the areas closest to the players' seats. European roulette and its derivatives feature this type of betting layout.
2. Double zero roulette layout.
The double zero layout is the same in every aspect as the single zero one, except for the fact that it has two green zero slots labelled 0 and 00. The additional zero is meant to add up to the house edge, which in turn stacks up to your chance of losing a spin. American casinos in particular, favor this layout and its corresponding wheel as it brings in more profit to the house than its single zero counterpart.
3. French roulette layout.
French roulette has its own distinctive layout thanks to its radically different table design – the wheel sits in the middle flanked by two betting boards. This allows players to sit next to three sides of each board. As such, outside bets in French roulette are located in both lengths and the side opposite of the wheel, almost completely surrounding the inside bets. Also, French roulette's textual labels are all in the French language, but can still be deciphered through intuition.
It is true that roulette can be played with nothing more than the wheel at hand. In practice however, it is still better to play the game with a betting layout, as it enhances the game's pacing and allows players to make their wagers very easily.
